She was key to her husband’s historic rise in Taiwan politics. Now she’s dragging him down. The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Chen Shui-bian, whose wife has been suspected in a corruption scandal. The protesters are of the view that the president might be also involved in the scandal.

Charges against President’s family were under consideration from a couple of months, but dramatic change took place when the protest started in streets after the indication of prosecution against the first lady. According to prosecutors, the involvement of President is not yet clarified, however, the possibility of involvement cannot ignored according to the submitted evidences.

The opponents, including the nationalist party, are planning to organize a rally today in the capital Taipei. The leaders of nationalist party are planning to take their campaign to the Legislature. It would be there second attempt after June to crumble the presidency. Two third of majority is required to drag down the president from its seat.

The opposition is hoping that the ruling party will vote against Mr. Chen so that the new president may be elected, this would be the initial step towards referendum to determine Chen’s fate.This has further damaged his leadership and credibility and will create more resentment in future.
