Ever since march, when first polling was held in Zimbabwe, Mugabe and his party ZanuPF has targeted opposition party leaders and its workers all over rural Zimbabwe in worst ever post-poll violence. Now with eyes on presidential run-off scheduled on 27th June ZanuPF is targetting opposition MDC supporters in and around capital Harare as well.
Elections were held peacefully but post-poll violence spread like fire when the outcome showed that opposition party MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai had a clear majority. Mugabe and his party would not give up so easily. Officially results were delayed and MDC didn’t get a clear more than 50% votes needed to avoid a presidential run-off. Election results show official tally of 47.9% for MDC, leaving much room for speculations of tampering. Now, the run-off is scheduled on 27th June and Zanu-PF is not taking any chances. It has turned its eyes on opposition supporters in urban areas around Harare as well.
Mugabe is busy campaigning against MDC, calling it anti-nationalist. He has come up with global conspiracy theory too. His party workers and militia are directly or indirectly hampering aid work in Zimbabwe. Morgan Tsvangirai was arrested and detained. Mugabe is using his power and position to stay at helm in spite of his globally unpopular image and very little support from within Africa as well. Maybe the coming week will see worst face of violence as a last bid of almost defeated leader of Zimbabwe to oust MDC.
With reports of violence and attack on opposition supporters in areas around capital Harare, it is a war like situation. What other countries can do? Maybe other leaders of Africa can intervene and stop this insane violent last act of vengeance of Mugabe. But will it be his last act?
