machete armed rioters caught and attacked an unknown man in kenya

It does not seem that the violence in Kenya will end some time soon. People in the streets are attacked and lynched to death. According to the International Crisis Group, armed groups on both the opposition and government sides are mobilizing for fresh attacks.

For those not aware, the roots of this ongoing Kenyan violence erupted ever since President Mwai Kibaki was declared winner of the Kenyan presidential election held on December 27, 2007. Kibaki was accused of widespread farud and irregularities, and his victory let to this civil unrest. Post Kibaki’s controversial victory, Raila Odinga’s (Kibaki’s opponent) supporters went on a violent rampage in several parts of Kenya. After police shot a number of demonstrators, violence escalated and was mostly directed Kikuyu people (the community to which Kibaki is a member).

Kofi Annan, ex-UN chief has been leading mediation talks in Nairobi. Though the two warring sides have agreed in principle to a grand conciliation, nothing has happened in reality. Even US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Kenya to support the talks.

Hopefully, some time in the very near future some settlement can be worked out, because this continuing violence is already having serious ramifications across East Africa, especially countries like Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda.
