UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon has urged nations to come to the fore to help poverty-ridden Africa to fulfill its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that it has badly failed to abide by. It is time for the rich world to keep the promises of 2005 to double aid the poor continent.
The promise to uplift millions of Africans from the squalor of poverty, hunger, disease, and illiteracy remains unfulfilled courtesy the political power game of the rich nations and their motive to garner influence and market. Is it a symbol of capitalism taking human side out of man? I am aghast at George Bush spending millions over military expenditures, but remaining unfaithful to his promise to help Africa get rid of its ills.
The UK, Italy, France, Germany and Japan are aiding millions of dollars to directly or indirectly finance American influence worldwide, but seldom take care of thousands dying in Darfur, or elsewhere in Africa. The UN in the absence of adequate funds due to non-contribution of its rich member nations looks handicap to achieve its MDGs.
Africa, the Dark Continent remains an example of apathy of western society to mankind. These so-called rich nations exploited Africa by establishing colonies once and pushed it to ethnic strife and continuous civil war to gain mileage in the Cold War era. Thousands in Africa are dying every year due to lack of food, drinking water and medicines. Shortage of basic infrastructural necessity like shelter and mass displacement due to continuous civil war are only adding to the manpower of terror outfits worldwide.
It is really sane that everything is going against the UN-sponsored MDGs. When will the rich nations learn their responsibility towards humanity?
