Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko dissolved the Ukrainian parliament on Monday and called for early elections on May 27.

The political crisis was brought about due the continuing tiff between Yushchenko and the Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych whose majority party in the parliament has been accused by Yushchenko of trying to increase its power base in contravention of previous agreements and taking unilateral national decisions.

President Yushchenko addressed the nation live on TV in which he called his decision an ‘obligation’ to preserve the ’sovereignty and territorial integrity’ of Ukraine.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian parliament met in an extraordinary session in which the Parliamentary speaker Oleksandr Moroz called Yushchenko’s decision without any legal basis while addressing PM Yanukovych’s majority Parliamentary coalition.

However notwithstanding Yushchenko’s call for the parliament to be dissolved, it continued to meet normally till last reports.
