The conditions of women in today’s economically-oriented Chinese society can be accessed in two different ways. In the first way, one could meet with successful women who are literate, independent and free to do things they want. On the other hand in rural China the women are equal to commodity and bound to lead harsh lifestyle while blindly serving their husbands.
If you believe on the statistic of World Health Organization, every year 150,000 women end their life in rural China. The reasons for such deaths could be loneliness, mental and sexual abuse, domestic violence and family’s pressure to emphasis on bearing sons.
To what extent is Chinese government securing the rights of its women? China is very much concerned about its reputation at international level; one Chinese officer has proved it. He warned Xie Lihua, a women’s right activist and publisher of Rural Women magazine about bad-mouthing her homeland. Certainly there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed and discussed.
Definitely the plight of women, particularly rural women is almost same in South Asian countries. Whether it is India, Pakistan, Nepal, China or Bangladesh, women are treated as second citizen in the society. In India, so many cases of illegal abortions had been registered and definitely more such cases could not be come in limelight due to some reasons.
The World’s most populated country China that implemented one child policy, allows rural families to have a second child if the first is female. What discrimination?
Women who become pregnant with a second girl face overwhelming pressure to abort the child in a country where such procedures are legal. There is need to change the mindset of people towards women who should get her rights and recognized for her deeds towards her own family and society. It can’t be done over the night. Consistent efforts should be made to promote gender equality and the development of women in China.
Beijing should improve its legal system to protect the rights and interests of women and strengthen social awareness.
