Russia has never been a supporter of the war in Iraq. President Vladimir Putin has always fostered an apprehensible and skeptical attitude towards the West, especially the US and Britain, and the outspoken Bush administration critic never flinches to throw his taunts at the US policy in Iraq or elsewhere.
What was supposed to be an annual Russian televised question-and-answer session centering on domestic issues easily turned into an opportunity for Mr. Putin to throw his disdain and criticisms at US President George W Bush. Mr. Putin’s answer to a question on Siberia’s oil resources could have been constrained but the Russian leader preferred to employ the answer as a sharp instrument for Mr. Bush for failing in Iraq.
Mr. Putin underlined the significance of the Iraqi war for the US. His sly hints suggest that Mr. Bush is looking to control oil reserves in Iraq and that was the main reason why the US spent millions to destroy Saddam Hussein’s dictatorial regime. This is a view shred by millions of others across the world who are convinced that the US has self-invested interest to destroy the Middle East nation.
Russia is a stern critic of the US and opposes most of the resolutions called by the US in the international arena. This week Mr. Putin announced his support for Iraq’s nuclear ambitions and also warned the US against any military attack on the nation. Mr. Putin is only adding to the swelling unpopularity of the Bush administration throughout the world when he himself remains a hugely popular political figure in his own country.
