Being liberal in love is another name for selfishness and promiscuity. Pope Benedict was reacting against this false liberalism when he urged Catholic druggists and doctors to stop selling contraceptives and abstain from performing abortions. Merinews reports the Italian health minister Livia Turco’s lividness at what she terms the Pope’s fascism. The Pope was speaking at the 25th International Congress of Catholic Pharmacists at Vatican City. He has been slammed as medieval and out of tune with the times. We undermine this Pope’s scholarship and his deep sympathy for human desires. Instead of focusing on the Church, let us see what these accusations against the Catholic Church reveal about the accusers.
Contraceptives are good money for industries. They will never want contraceptives banned. They argue that contraceptives prevent AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases. True. But, if I were to ask what advice will you give your own kids about preventing AIDS? I am certain you will not counsel them to have protected sex. The sane and non-hypocritical answer is to have responsible monogamous sex. That is what the Pope is asking. He is being honest in the face of remarkable depravity. The way to prevent AIDS is not having more irresponsible sex.
The Pope speaks from a conviction that contraception focuses us more towards lust and less towards procreation. More and more couples throughout the world are opting for a double-income-no-kids lifestyle. Now this has to be seen in a bipartite manner. Firstly, each child who is born brings us renewed hope that God has not tired of this world yet. So procreation is a sign of God’s love for mankind. According to faith none has a right to interfere in God’s will for mankind. Second, we must see this effort of the Catholic Church as a defense against extremist societies where people are bound by their religion to propagate fast and exponentially.
The general whining that assaults the Church deals with the population problem of the world. But then we wonder why these people only rant at Catholicism. Ironically, the white world is fast dwindling and Africa and the Asian sub-continents are not Catholic majorities. Why then are people attacking the Church? Simple, these are arm-chair theoreticians who are scared stiff of being hacked to death if they speak the truth. So knowing the Church as a soft-target they keep on attacking her.
A Catholic priest once told this writer that let the Pope do whatever he wants in Rome, but people will have their pleasures. It is this spirit of carnality which will undo Europe soon. Then there will remain no point in ranting against the passing of a great civilization into violent hands. The Catholic Church is the only numerically strong beacon which can effectively fight the evil that has arisen in this blighted world.
I declare being a non-Catholic without wishing ever to become one.
