It has been five long, bloody years in Darfur and people continue to live an existence dominated by war, terror, militia and AK-47s. Initially, it was a terror campaign run by the government against the civilians and now, the condition seems to have worsened off; Its a free for all situation, with anyone having a machine gun able to kill and rob. Osman, a World Food Program truck driver, feels the situation now, is more dangerous with carjacking, which was rare, has increased tremendously and driving trucks in these parts of the country, is an invitation to death.
The conflict between the Arabs and the Africans is taking new directions in which some Arabs who usually sided with the Arab dominated government, are now more interested in smoking marijuana, robbing and murdering other Sudanese people. The battle for power, which was fought by 3 rebel groups, has now multiplied into many more rebel groups. Emancipation, ending discrimination, was the rebel’s drive at the beginning, whereas today they don’t know what they want and violence is all they can indulge in. The peacekeeping units are left in a situation, which is not conducive to any kind of amelioration of the situation.
