People opposed to freedom of expression have of late targeted bloggers and have demanded censorship of blogs. The military rulers of Myanmar have suppressed all voices advocating democracy in the country by either incarcerating or murdering the advocates of democracy. While independent media has lost its place in the country, the junta has recently cracked down on the country’s bloggers. On Jan 23, the administration blocked the Google-owned Blogger, the only blog platform accessible within the country. On Wednesday, the administration has taken a blogger, Nay Myo Latt into custody for writing about the suppression of freedom in Myanmar following the junta’s crushing of pro-democratic movements in fall last year.
It is strange that the junta in under the impression that by stifling free voices the global community will remain oblivious to the condition of people of Myanmar and the desire for democratic values will be lost from the minds of the people of the country. The military dictators of the country remain stooped in corruption while the masses suffer. It seems strange why the western world that is prompt to remove the Islamic dictators from Iraq and Afghanistan are over-cautious while dealing with Myanmar’s military junta. Perhaps the situation would have been different if the country had a number of oil wells.
