Following the sharp increase in crime in various parts of the country, police launched a major search for the most wanted criminal in an effort to curb the vice. A reward of about $2,000 had been offered for the capture of Simon Matheri who was killed in a night ambush at his home. Matheri was accused of killing two American diplomats and a famous Kenyan medical researcher last month during an armed robbery.

Security experts blame rising crime on the growing numbers of jobless youth and the unchecked flow of illegal guns into the country through Somalia and other unstable neighbors.
