Conservative presidential candidate Felipe Calderon turning up on top at first count in the Mexican elections will enable the US to protect its interests in the region as most of Latin America disillusioned by free market trade increasingly turns left.
A dispute in the bitterly contested election would prove costly for Mexico, US and the whole region. Calderon’s likelihood victory has already received an approval from the Mexican financial markets but just in case Lopez Obrador from the losing Democratic Revolution Party decides to incite trouble, the country could be in for a period of instability.
While the world waits the official declaration of the election results, top Mexican election officials insist that the race is too close to declare a winner and only a recount will decide the issue.
