dhiren-barot_18Barot, a British al-Qa’eda fanatic who planned to kill thousands with nuke bombs, has pleaded guilty of conspiracy and mass murder and faces life term in jail. He is expected to be sentenced today. Seven other men denied all charges. He admitted plotting a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks in London including one involving a radioactive “dirty bomb”. He was also, pleaded guilty of planning attacks against the IMF, World Bank and financial institutions in New York, Washington and Newark.

The plan was to carry out massive explosions, the principal object being to kill hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent people without warning. Writing after the Madrid attacks in March 2004, Barot said it was a respectable project that deserves to be emulated. Some document told of plans to fill limousines with gas canisters and drive them into car parks beneath important buildings where they would be blown up. He called the document the ‘Final Presentation for Gas Limos Project’. Although, he did not focus on the World Trade Center, Barot was said to have three other projects, including one that he called the “Radiation (Dirty Bomb) Project”. The dirty bomb is sometimes called the “poor man’s nuclear weapon”. However, whereas the aim of a nuclear bomb is instant and outright destruction, a dirty bomb would have an entirely different effect.

Barot, 34, yesterday became the first Muslim accused of plotting explosions in this country to plead guilty. He was arrested in August 2004. A short man, with a neatly clipped beard, he stood up and answered clearly “I plead guilty” when the charge of conspiracy to murder was put to him yesterday.
