The Liberian problem shows no sign of letting up despite the best efforts of the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, mainly because of the donor countries’ apathy towards the reconstruction of the civilian administration.

When Mr Annan meets President Sirleaf it is to be seen whether the latter displays all his cards or not. But it would be beneficial both for him as well as his countrymen if he did so.

Mr Annan is sure to visit the rubber plantations where insecurity rages. The Secretary General will get a first-hand account of the situation there and his report to the United Nations Security Council will be that much more comprehensive. It will enable the world body to take more efficient steps towards the reconstruction of the country.
