The recently concluded nuclear deal between Morocco and France once more demonstrate the international progress that France is making under the leadership of Nicolas Sarkozy. The French President is making headways in the international arena keeping his domestic policies intact. The nuke deal with modest Morocco underlines the swelling significance that France is gathering under the strict disciplinarian President.
France’s commitment to help the African nation build a civilian nuclear energy industry portrays the country’s eagerness to enhance its image in the international community. France is one of the most important members of the elite European Union club but when it comes to the world, the US and Britain appear to be leading the charge. But France seems bent on changing that.
For Morocco, the deal signifies prosperity and development. With a population of only 33 million, Morocco is one of the poorer States in Africa and till now has lacked the energy reserves of its immediate neighbour Algeria. Moroccan politicians are already thinking of going one step further: they aim to construct a nuclear power station in the Marrakesh region.
Morocco is the second north African nation to have signed a nuclear deal with France, Libya being the other one. The nation is still steeped in poverty and energy resources are scarce. The nuclear deal has helped to infuse in a sense of optimism and hope for the politicians. The French are also satisfied that their ties with Africa are getting strengthened.
Any discussion on nuclear issue would inevitably draw the Iran factor in. the France’s commitment to help Morroco develop nuclear power for peaceful, civilian purposes is a window of opportunity for Iran. Should Iran also stop being obstinate, come out of its shell and accede to the international rules and principles, it to could be helped by the international community in enhancing its nuclear facility.
