The member countries of the EU will unveil a plan to deal with the immigration crises in Brussels today. It envisages teams of rapid reaction border guards called Frontex and comes in the wake of proposals by member states for the creation of teams of experts to deal quickly to requests for help.
Spain sought help in May to tackle an influx of migrants to the Canary Islands, where about 11,000 migrants landed this year bea6ting all records, but it has yet to arrive.
Sources in Brussels say that not all the countries which promised ships, aircraft and manpower have made good on their pledges. It will take time for the details of operation of Frontex, the first one to be given to it, to be worked out.
The European Commission will discuss and define the tasks of Frontex and its funding today. As an example in the Canary Islands operation, Spain will control 6the foreign border guards but Frontex experts will provide assistance and support.
At their summit last December, EU leaders requested the Commission to put forth a proposal for the creation of rapid reaction teams consisting of national experts able to provide technical and operational support in times of high influxes of migrants. Moreover the Commission is also expected to approve today a list of priority polices to tackle illegal immigration.
These are expected to include a new system of registering the arrival and departure of non-EU citizens visiting EU and a crackdown on employment of illegal immigrants.
