Presidential election is going to take place in Congo today. The public of Congo is hoping to end decades of war and expect the upliftment of country’s economic conditions.
Congo is rich in natural resources, but the long war had ripped the soul of the country and made it poor. About 25 million people are going to vote in these elections. These 25 million voters are going to decide the fate of two main leaders, one is Joseph Kabila and another is Jean-Pierre Bemba.
In the first round of polling, Kabila received 45 percent of the votes; most probably he is supposed to be the winning candidate.
The democratic elections are in fact first in Congo after 40 years. It is believed that it is the final step in a peace process after a 1998-2003 war. In this war of 5 years about 4 million people died, according to surveys it is believed that round about 1200 people die in Congo daily. The people of Congo are of view that the struggle may end after these elections. Peoples are enthusiastic to vote because they think it may end the violence. Although the conditions are not so good presently, still there is tension in capital Kinshasa.
On the other hand people believe that both the leaders are not able, but they had left with no other choice. Public is considering it as a choice between ‘mad dogs’ and ‘mad wolves’.
