While the UN Security Council, the US and different other nations and organizations are striving for the complete denuclearization of North Korea and Iran and make the world a safe place, British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s latest plan to renew their nuclear weapons system has raised another debate over double standards and different yard sticks that have been exercised to measure different nations of the world.
Blair addressing the House of Commons expressed the need of renewing its nuclear weapons system and replacing the submarines that carry the Trident missiles for the national interest.
I think it’s right we take the decision now to begin work on replacing the Trident nuclear submarines. I think that is essential for our security in an uncertain world. I believe it is important that we recognize that, although it is impossible to predict the future, the one thing, as I said in my statement earlier, that is certain is the unpredictability of it.
The issue become interesting when around 80 Labour members of Parliament expressed their disquiet, but the opposition Conservatives supported the nuclear weapons revamp plan, therefore, the policy automatically turned into an unchallenged winner.
Most of the experts believe that Trident will turn out to be a dangerous white elephant that, like most of Blair’s policies, will encourage nuclear proliferation and make the world much more dangerous.
On the other the new plan, with a 20 billion pounds ($49 billion) budget, will be too costly that could easily be a booster, if used, for many other social and development plans.
