The ethnic-cum-tribal conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region, sponsored by the Sudanese govt. seems to be developing a gravely violent flavor suddenly, after reports of proliferation in the number of armed militia groups. Confirming these reports are very-frequent incidents of violence in the form of shooting, looting, public beating, abduction and rape.

The situation has become so threatening that, even aid organizations and their workers are being targeted at. Aid workers have been forced to fly between destinations due to fear of being attacked while on road travel. Some organizations are even considering a pull out of the region. Now, this could mean disaster to the people who rely on these set-ups for their needs.

While the affected people see the arrival of the combined United Nations-African Union force with great expectations, this hope is not likely to be satisfied easily, due to delays both politically and administratively. The Sudanese government itself is yet to show ’some responsible interest’ in this force. To compound problems, many rebel leaders boycotted the peace talks mooted from Libya. This discussion is now expected to take a meaningful position only next year.

With over four years of intense fighting, one would hope the Sudanese government to make a sincere effort to put an end to the genocide it masterminds. It is also time the international community took some ‘real hard’ decisions on the Sudanese government. Violence of this degree is simply not acceptable.
