Christianity’s Official Alternative

There was once a time when the religion of Christianity dominated the world, coming from the first world to assert its influence on the third world countries, it seemed that it was able to extend its influence over a large part of the world either through annexing the territories or through cultural influences. The focal point of Christianity is still considered to be the United Kingdom who has, until now managed to uphold the faith. But now the face of this very historical reality seems to be changing with the changing times. The current picture in the Great Britain perhaps is beginning to view and perceive the existence of other religions and laws like the Islamic ‘Sharia’ laws. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams has recently remarked and apprehended that aspects of the Sharia law should be incorporated in the legal system of Britain. The remarks have indeed led to condemnation and disapproval by the religious groups and members of the parliament in the country. Islamic laws are known for their draconian concepts and brutal punishments for which they have been demarcated from the other religions to a great extent. Ranging from rights of women to the divorce and marriage laws, the Sharia has never been perceived in a light that has an enabling feature for the west. And in this view the changes of the laws in Britain will not be seen as conducive to anything. Adopting the Sharia as an official alternative to the British laws is seen as blasphemous for some. Retaliating to this Khalid Mahmood, the Muslim Labour MP for Birmingham exclaimed that, This is very misguided. There is no half-way house with this. What part of the Sharia law does he want? The sort that is practiced in Saudi Arabia, which they are struggling to get away from? Muslims do not need special treatment or to be specially singled out. This would not contribute to community cohesion. If this proposed scenario comes to become a reality then the already Islamic existing communities will get a definite boost and preponderance over the Christian community at large. It’s now a question whether a particular religious law can be manipulated with or not considering the faith and belief of the people at large. [Source: Telegraph]
