a red light area in the netherlands

It is the oldest profession in the world and now in the 21st century, it is in serious danger of being eradicated. Nations across the entire world, and especially those in Europe, are pressing the accelerator hard to get rid of this scar on society.

Several nations in Europe have already banned prostitution and still more are in the process of doing so.

The latest European nation to ban prostitution is Bulgaria. The Easter bloc has long been considered as the hub of illegal sex trafficking and although there had been a recent surge to legalize prostitution and thereafter to make a crackdown of illegal sex trade, the nation sharply shifted it stance on Friday.

Bulgaria now have officially banned prostitution and this implies that thousands of women, many of them smuggled into the nation from abroad, would be out of job.

Or would be forced to go deeper into the underground and carry on their job from there. Prostitution as a profession has escalated so dramatically since the last century that now it’s almost practically impossible to wipe it out altogether. In Bulgaria, the sex traders do not necessarily work in brothels; they venture out of the marked red-light area into streets at night time.

For many this provides more security and freedom since the sellers can choose their clients and do not have to sell themselves to someone they wouldn’t want to.

The Bulgarian government is adamant that it can eliminate prostitution from its territories but previously failed efforts and the vast expanse of the network suggest otherwise.

Illegal trafficking of flesh traders from outsider the country is still rampant in the country and there are reports of thousands being exported to the western European nations every year even without their will.

Finland imposed the ban of prostitution last year, Norway is on the brink of doing the same, Sweden has tough law restrictions on sex trade, the Czech Republic too has shifting away from legalizing prostitution and even in the Netherlands, there’s proposals of shutting down a quarter of the brothels.

So the fight against prostitution is in full swing. But the stark naked truth is that desperate women and naive young girls would almost certainly be coaxed into prostitution even with tougher laws and restrictions.

Prostitution is an extension of the evils of society and as long as society doesn’t cleanse itself, the oldest profession would always sustain itself in one form or the other.
