51-year-old Asif Zardari, late Mrs.Benazir Bhutto’s husband, with his son Bilawal, aged 19 — now the co-chairmen of the People’s Party — has asked President Pervez Musharraf to step down, warning the opposite’s possibility of leading the situation to like that in Somalia. Zardari also alleged that instead of Al-Qaeda it was ‘the establishment’ which had a double meaning pointing towards Musharraf as well. Regarding the claim of al-Qaeda, he said,
I don’t think we’re as yet a threat to Al-Qa’ida. We weren’t in government. Why aren’t they killing off the existing structure of the government? Why would they come after us? There are definitely some in-house games going on, which either nobody is aware of or are scared to unearth.
Speaking from Naudero, his wife’s ancestral village, he described Pakistan’s role in the fight against terror as “shadow boxing”, which he said is going to harm Pakistan and the people. He also considers elections as the only reason for Benezir’s killing, but there is a much larger motive behind all this.
About Pakistan’s fate, he warned that it was dark under the shadow of Musharraf. And that Pakistan is turning into a broken state. He appealed to the ‘think tanks’ of the country to contemplate on the issue and do something about the situation.
