Terror attacks increase world over after 9/11 shocking incident, so does the rift between religions - Christianity and Islam. Christianity and Islam are the two most widely followed faiths and at almost every massive act of terror anywhere in the world is the conflict between these two religions.
The relationship between Christianity and Islam was strained last year when Pope Benedict unwittingly hinted that Islam advocated violence at a gathering. The Pope also appeared to state that the entire foundation of Islam was built on irrational ideas. That enraged the entire Muslim community spread across the world. But efforts have been made since to repair the damage and now the surprisingly approach by 138 Muslim scholars to amplify understanding and peace between the two religions does seem to be the light at the end of the tunnel.
The best part of the letter addressed to the Pope and others senior dignitaries of the Christian faith is that the Muslim scholars come from all regions of the world, including Europe, Middle East and North America, and represent Sunni, Shi’ite and Sufi communities.
Islam has often been found to be riffed with internal litigation with the Sunni, Shi’ite and Sufi community divided ideologically. But the call for peace - both within Islam and with Christianity is of course a great move to eradicate terrorism and promote tolerance world over.
One can increase the degree of optimism as far as restoring religious peace is concerned. The Vatican has expressed pleasant surprise at this proposal by the Muslim scholars but has embraced the idea gladly. World leaders have often failed to address the swelling problem of terrorism that has its roots in religious conflict and maybe the religious leaders and scholars could just succeed where they have failed: usher in a new era of peace and security in the world.
